G1 Bing Crosby

Despite the antics from Drefong as he took a left turn at the point where the chute meets the main track and unseated Mike Smith, the Super Screener’s next three ranked horses comprised the Trifecta.  That included our top long shot pick, Moe Candy running a big race to finish 3rd at 14-1.  Both Moe Candy and especially Roy H ran much better races than what the final outcome shows, as they were carried out to the middle of the track by the loose Drefong turning into the stretch.  Definitely play those horses back next time out.

Here’s what the Super Screener said about the winner, Ransom the Moon and our top long shot player, Moe Candy:

“#4 Ransom the Moon is a prime value play here as the switch to the D’Amato barn and back to the dirt have really paid off.  Despite modest pace set ups in his last three races in short fields, he ran three big races and the last work and form cycle analysis indicate that he is sitting on a lifetime top. Super play for those in search of value.”

“John Sadler’s charge, #11 Moe Candy, is an interesting player here who is a very lightly raced 5 year-old with only 9 lifetime starts. Clearly he has had some health challenges but form cycle analysis shows that he has emerged from those challenges and is ready for a top effort at a price as the Screener top long shot play.  Work pattern is very positive.  He’ll sit a great trip stalking leaders in a comfortable, trouble-free outside position.  He sports a very balanced energy distribution profile which will serve him extremely well given the pace set up and projected race flow.  Use under in exotics.”

With that, the Super Screener suggested Trifecta and Superfecta wagers cashed for nearly $1,000.

G1 Haskell

The early Super Screener Kentucky Derby dark horse pick, Girvin, fulfills on his promise (while doing so with four healthy hooves) in nosing out McCraken who the Super Screener completely dismissed.  Heavily favored Irish War Cry, Timeline and Battle of Midway may have not been going terribly fast (though we’ll need to see how this race comes back from a pace variant standpoint) but the pressure was heavy throughout.  A great handicapping lesson.  It isn’t always about the speed as pressure has more of an impact on combatants when it comes to energy depletion.  Regardless, we knew this wasn’t the greatest crop of 3 year-olds and with each of them taking turns winning Stakes races there has yet to be a leader among them.  Ironically it is our top board hitter pick, Practical Joke, that might be the most consistent runner of all of them.

G1 Vanderbilt

El Deal is the real deal as he took the lead as expected but was only challenged briefly by Green Gratto before he dusted off the rest of this field.  The assumption that led to the Screener’s assessment of “vulnerable favorite” did not materialize and that left a lone horse loose on the lead which is always dangerous.  He beat some good ones in here, so he will be a contender when he lines up in the gate for the G1 Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Del Mar.

G2 Bowling Green

Our top long shot and win pick, Closing Bell, was pulled up with an injury but was able to walk off the course which is always good to see.  The winner of the race was the improbable Hunter O’Riley, who came from last to first and did so into a slow pace.  Shows you just how weak this division is and when it comes to the G1 Breeders’ Cup Turf, you can count on the Euro shippers to clean up once again.  Bigger Picture and Sadler’s Joy ran good races and will continue to compete well at this level.  Ascend was a Super Screener “Vulnerable Favorite” and he really came up flat in the stretch as we had surmised.

With summer racing now in full swing, Saratoga puts on another fabulous card this Saturday featuring the G1 Whitney and the G1 Test and not to be out done, Del Mar is offering a couple of Graded Stakes as well.

Until next weekend…Go fast and win!
