G3 Marshua’s River

The scratch of our Super Screener top long shot pick at 20-1 of #2 Lobelia made this race, which was only rated a “2” in terms of playability in first place, a lot less attractive from a wagering perspective.  The Super Screener wasn’t hot on Pletcher’s Sandiva (especially at odds of 7-5) which had disappointed in many races this past year but jumped up big time and got the job done today.  The top two Screener picks finished 3rd and and 4th, respectively, with the former drawing to a big lead cutting through swift fractions and then narrowly missing at the end when his stablemate Sandiva passed her for the win.  That was a solid effort.

In the end, it was a chalky outcome in a field reduced to 7 starters.

G3 Ft. Lauderdale

Really a tough beat here as the horse ranked last by the Super Screener ends up winning this race at odds of 15-1 and finishing 2nd was a Super Screener top win pick “A” horse in #8 Almanaar which did prove to be better than stablemate #2 Night Prowler as projected.  Any of five horses were in contention to win this just a jump before the wire with no more than 1 length separating the top five finishers.  #1 Heart to Heart ran another big race here doing all the work up front and then finishing fourth as the Super Screener anticipated. Both Super Screener long shot bombers finished up the track.

G3 Hal’s Hope

Once again, a Pletcher favorite, Tommy Macho, that the Super Screener projected to be vulnerable at low odds, won convincingly returning to the track and distance of his lifetime top which was followed by very dull efforts.  The Super Screener top win pick, #4 Realm, could only manage a 3rd place finish while our top long shot bomber pick #6 Hy Riverside was coming on late and finished best of all the long shots but finished 5th just missing the bottom of the Superfecta.  In the end another chalky finish.

The Winter racing doldrums finally breaks this weekend with a super loaded day of stakes racing on Saturday as it is Sunshine Millions Day at Gulfstream Park featuring several races that total $1 million in purse money including the Sunshine Millions Classic.  In addition, Fair Grounds kicks off their Derby prep season with the G3 Lecomte Stakes.  As a bonus, Santa Anita will be running the G2 Santa Monica.

Until next weekend…Go fast and win!
