Fire Plug Stakes

This race started as a 12-horse field but 5 scratches reduced it to a compact 7-horse affair. That changed the entire complexion of the race.  While there was insufficient time for rewriting the comments for each horse, we adjusted the suggested wagers to reflect the new composition of the race.  Speed would now have more of an advantage and deep closers would struggle to hit the Exacta.  That’s, indeed, what happened.  Favorite Tale did go to the lead but was quickly accosted by a resurgent Awesome Banner who got the perfect pressing trip and he put that foe away in the stretch (Favorite Tale just came back too quick after his last race) and then held off a game, It’s the Journey, who was in close attendance throughout and showed that he was back in form as well.  A Super Screener bottom of Exotics favorite, #7 Something Awesome. obliged with a strong 3rd place finish.

The adjusted Super Screener suggested wagers popped for $916.

Sunshine Millions F/M Turf

The Super Screener top win pick got the predicted perfect trip and had demonstrated that, as we expected, she was much the best winning this one rather easily improving her win record on this turf course to 7 of 12 starts.  Here’s what the Super Screener said about his mare before the race:

“#4 Starship Jubilee does stand out from the rest of the crowd here and she is the Super Screener top win pick. Her advantage here is that having faced so much better and possessing that very tactical running style, she’ll be able to track the pace very comfortably leaving plenty in the tank for the final furlong as she’ll need to in order to hold off the most spry of the late runners.  She has 6 wins out of 11 starts on this turf course and she just submitted a super sharp series of works coming off that brief layoff.  Very game top win contender.”

Daddy’s Boo went to the lead as expected and was certainly game throughout but could not hold off the winner.  Graceful Heart proved that the last race was legit and should be respected next time out.  Super Screener Top Long Shot pick, Bitacora, just missed the bottom of the Superfecta by a neck at odds of 25-1.

The Super Screener suggested Exacta and Trifecta wagers hit for about $275 with the top two favorites finishing 1-2.

G3 Las Cienegas

The chalk fest continued with co-favorite Coniah winning this in wire-to-wire fashion with Mandella-trained, Bendable, getting a possible pass on the early entry to the breeding shed as she showed promise in finishing a game 2nd in her first try sprinting on turf.  Beau Recall failed on the huge class drop as the Super Screener Vulnerable Favorite pick owing to the fact that this distance was just too short for him despite the unexpected fast pace.  Instant Reflex and Anita Partner were complete no shows here.

Pasco Stakes

The layoff and gaps in training made no difference to the Pasco winner, World of Trouble. who just destroyed this field in near record time.  The running line came back very solid in that energy was laid out in a very elevated but balanced way indicating that he should carry this form over to 2 turns without difficulty.  Looks like it is on to the Tampa Bay Derby from here for this dazzling colt’s biggest test as the Kentucky Derby prep race, the Sam F. Davis comes up next but in less than 3 weeks from now which may be too soon.

He Hate Me was a clear 2nd and submitted an encouraging performance especially considering that he had been away from racing since early June.  We may see this one in the Tampa Bay Derby as well.

While the G1 Pegasus World Cup isn’t looming as big as last year’s race, it’s still the world’s richest race and it marks the return of Gun Runner who will be awfully tough to take down despite facing 11 other foes.  With a few sprinters in the race, perhaps they’ll try to push Gun Runner through swift, more pressured fractions to try and drain some of that energy reserve to level the playing field in the final furlong.  The surrounding stakes races on the Pegasus World CupDay card will feature some very deep and competitive fields to choose from.  Of course, Santa Anita and Laurel will also offer some very attractive stakes options (though we may back off Laurel for a bit until they can get their quarantine situation resolved which will continue to negatively impact field size in the days ahead).

Until then, Go Fast and Win!
